digital fasting

In case you're not clear on the role digital networking plays in the lives of an emerging generation - or if you're still holding fast to the idea that our communication medium does not affect our worldview - check this out.

It's an article published on CNN last week that discusses a new kind of sacrifice Catholic young people are making: fasting from MySpace.

"Some of my friends think it's silly, since people usually give up food," said 16-year-old Emily Montgomery, who says she's given up her access to MySpace. "I wanted to give up something that's really hard for me."

Not only is this a fresh perspective on how central networking tools like MySpace and Facebook are in the lives of a digital generation (MySpace attracted 64.4 million unique visitors in February alone), it's a glimpse of culture a couple decades down the road.
